First we must look at what the room looked like before we moved in:
And this is the room now:
A little girls' paradise of pink and turquoise roses, ruffles, polka dots and tutus!
Their papa painted the room a delicate pink, which radically transformed the room. The beds were previously owned Ikea bunk beds, and with 4 coats of white paint and a lot of gripping, I successfully turned them into little girl beds. I splurged on fabulous ruffle and roses sheets from JC Penny and Winners,
but I couldn't find any duvet covers that would satisfy my shabby chic needs and budget, so I ordered pink polka dot sheets from Sears, sewed them together and added pink ribbon for the ends.
My favourite element of their bedding are the two quilts sewed with love by their Grandma and Nana. Each girl received a pink quilt from their Grandma and a patchwork quilt from their Nana:
Okay, I may be a little obsessive, but even their dollhouse needed to match the room. I found this house on the side of the road, painted it white and turquoise, added some rose ruffle curtains and only then deemed it appropriate for their room.
This antique bassinet was found and graciously given to me by by fabulously creative friend Lidija. After a quick spray paint and some minor repairs from their Papa, is was added to the room. Yes, even the babies' outfits match the room!
The bulletin board above the bassinet was lovingly created by my parents before the girls were born. They painted a thrift store frame white and added a bulletin board, fabric and ribbon.
The tutu lampshades are a CountryChiq design, on thrift store lamp bases @ http://www.facebook.com/CountryChiq#!/media/set/?set=a.186332904746152.42774.174641322581977&type=3
The Kleenex box cover company on Etsy was first discovered by Lidija and then passed on to me. check out the site @ http://www.etsy.com/shop/headtotoe2009.
The dresser is my pride and joy. I found it on the side of the road and lifted it by myself onto my truck. It has a 70s/chic feel to it with the funky handles and swirly legs. We bought the cabinet from the previous owners, painted it white, and now it houses all of the girls' books (book shelves are too messy for me). The mirror was a Canadian Tire "cheapie" painted white, and the chair was a garage sale discovery already painted white. The quilts piled on the chair are my husband's baby quilts.
The "reading corner" is such a cozy place to read before sleep time. The comfy, down filled couch was my grandmother's, and the ruffle was sewn by my mother for the girls' crib. I would love to recover the couch, but I am not sure I am up for the challenge. So for now, the ruffle will have to do. The lamp was left behind from the previous owners and I simply put a thrift store tutu over top of the shade. I bought the little bench at a thrift store, and then I recovered it with vintage roses and painted it white. The flags were made for a friend's baby shower and made their way into the reading corner.
And let's talk about the Pink Roses painting. Painted by Kylah Kussmann and given to me as a baby shower gift, it embodies the true essence of shabby chic. Roses, texture, drips. Imperfectly glorious. All of my paintings are inspired by the many hours spent gazing at this painting in my girls' nursery and bedroom.
And let's talk accessories:
books, birds, slippers, baskets and chairs (covers sewn by my mother-in-law), and CountryChiq paintings http://www.facebook.com/CountryChiq :
I just love this room. It captures my passion for roses, my love of history and my obsession with ruffles, but most of all, it was formed through the love of friends and family to celebrate the birth and life of my sweet little treasures.
